چکیده مقاله:

Background: Monitoring the depth of anesthesia (DOA) takes an important role for anesthetists in order avoiding undesirable reactions such as intraoperative awareness, prolonged recovery and increased risk of postoperative complications. The Central Nervous System (CNS) is the main target of anesthetic drugs, hence EEG signal processing during anesthesia is helpful for monitoring DOA. In order to study and interpret charactheristics of signals, assessment of orrelation between neurophysiological signals is an usful tool. Methods: This study applies nonlinear interdependence and Cross recurrence analysis measures to analyze EEG signals recorded from eight human volunteers under a brief Propofol anesthesia and compared with Cross correlation measure. The prediction probability (Pk) was used to assess the performance of measures for predictiong BIS. In order to evaluate the efficiency of all measures in distinguishing different anesthetic states, box plots of EEG-derived measures were compared with Kruskal–Wallis test. Moreover, the coefficient of variation (mean±SD) was employed to describe the index stability during different states. Correlation coefficient (R) between each index and bispectral index (BIS) is measured to investigate their performance. Results: Nonlinear measures demonstrates the less variability at the loss of consciousness in comparison with BIS (standard deviation of 0.09) and show that P values less than 0.05 and the highest Pk and higher correlation coefficient with BIS index. Conclusion: Nonlinear measures demonstrates the less variability at the loss of consciousness in comparison with BIS (standard deviation of 0.09). Furthermore, these measures demonstrate good performance to differentiate anesthetic states and had higher correlation with BIS and better robustness to noise in comparison with linear measure.

Monitoring depth of anesthesia utilizing a combination of electroencephalographic and standard measures.

BACKGROUND For decades, monitoring depth of anesthesia was mainly based on unspecific effects of anesthetics, for example, blood pressure, heart rate, or drug concentrations. Today, electroencephalogram-based monitors promise a more specific assessment of the brain function. To date, most approaches were focused on a "head-to-head" comparison of either electroencephalogram- or standard paramete...

A Comparison of Multiscale Permutation Entropy Measures in On-Line Depth of Anesthesia Monitoring

OBJECTIVE Multiscale permutation entropy (MSPE) is becoming an interesting tool to explore neurophysiological mechanisms in recent years. In this study, six MSPE measures were proposed for on-line depth of anesthesia (DoA) monitoring to quantify the anesthetic effect on the real-time EEG recordings. The performance of these measures in describing the transient characters of simulated neural pop...

Quantification of depth of anesthesia by nonlinear time series analysis of brain electrical activity

We investigate several quantifiers of the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal with respect to their ability to indicate depth of anesthesia. For 17 patients anesthetized with sevoflurane, three established measures (two spectral and one based on the bispectrum), as well as a phase space based nonlinear correlation index were computed from consecutive EEG epochs. In the absence of an independent w...

Monitoring depth of anaesthesia by EEG

Depth of anaesthesia is a dynamic balance between effect-site concentration of hypnotic and analgesic drugs, and intensity of surgical stimulation. Awareness during surgery is one of the most feared complications of anaesthesia but excessive depth of anaesthesia is equally undesirable, given the narrow therapeutic index of anaesthetic drugs and the reduced physiological reserve of many patients...

Improving Depth Maps by Nonlinear Diffusion

Dense depth maps, typically produced by stereo algorithms, are essential for various computer vision applications. For general configurations in which the cameras are not necessarily parallel or close together, it often proves difficult to obtain reasonable results for complex scenes, in particular in occluded or textureless regions. To improve the depth map in such regions, we propose a post-p...
